The Dillydoun Review: Artisan

Artisan

The Dillydoun Review is an online, literary journal that publishes prose and poetry.

The Dillydoun Review derives its name from the archaic word ‘dillydoun,’ meaning “a little lullaby.” Lullabies have been used for centuries to strengthen cultural roles, pass down knowledge, and lure children to sleep with dulcet tones.

But, if you listen closely to even the sweetest-sounding lullaby, there is often a dark, disturbing subject matter threaded through the lyrics. They are complex representations of humanity’s innocence and the struggle to survive an often violent, unforgiven culture of its making. These hypnotic, mournful laments are captivating, terrifying, and yet, scientifically proven to provide therapeutic effects and health benefits for both young and old…

Published monthly, Issue 10 of The Dillydoun Review is now live and features a fresh and eclectic mix of short stories, flash fiction, nonfiction, flash nonfiction, prose poetry, and poetry, including, Artisan; a new poem by J H Martin.

You can read Issue 10 of The Dillydoun Review for free here.

Bare Concrete Blue

Come on now son
Let’s beat away time
With the soles of these boots
And sing us a song
To shake off the dust

For how many years
Can these months truly last?

For all of these memories
And all of their longing
To feel what they once felt
Are no more than bare trees
To this cold winter blue

For now
The ancient has gone
And the new quickly fades
No matter how many things
We may like to
Construct from this world

So let us just walk then
You – my shadow – and me
Through these concrete dream streets
And these phantom filled crowds

For any hope is not here
But beyond that clear frosted sky

In those palaces of silver
In that river of gold

Bare Concrete Blue was first published in Rue Scribe; an online journal of small literature. The poem comes from 八詩 ; a short collection of eight poems by J H Martin, which you can read and download for free here

Immortal Green

My world is drunk
With memory

But behind
The dank green
Of its fallen leaves

The heart always sobers

With no roof up above
And no love down below
These thoughts are but stars
To leave to their wheel

Walking onwards alone
I laugh at nothing

Eternity circles

Cleave yonder from blue
